Summer School
The summer school (sometimes called Smallpeice) is an annual Summer School that we (usually, 2025 notwithstanding) hold in collaboration with the Smallpeice Trust. During this weeklong event, normally held in early August, SRO are responsible for the event. Staff from the Smallpeice trust ensure the welfare of students outside of the working day.
SRO has a number of responsibilities during the event, including:
- Ensuring the safety of students both in labs and during the event
- Planning for the week, including preparation the weekend before, the course itself, and tear down the following weekend
- Creating a game that is both challenging and achievable, and which offers a fair but competitive environment
- Providing technical advice to teams where neccessary
- Providing teams with a workspace, tools, and kit to build their robot
- Producing material (usually in the form of lab sessions) which will teach teams the skills that they need to be successful in the competition.
The aim is to have teams leave the competition having had fun, but also having developed skills that will help them pursue degrees and careers in STEM fields.
